Raymond, Mackaye and Kelly
A sordid affair between Hollywood stars ended in tragedy, leaving film actor Ray Raymond dead and his rival, Paul Kelly, facing prison. The scandal captured the nation's attention.
A drunken Raymond confronted Kelly about a love triangle involving Raymond's wife. An equally inebriated Kelly went to the Raymond home, and the Raymonds' maid witnessed Kelly, a larger man, beat Raymond.
Raymond's wife, actress Dorothy Mackaye, delayed medical help for her husband, who was taken to a hospital the next day - but died shortly after arriving.
Mackaye and Kelly conspired to pass off the slaying as a natural death, even paying a doctor to falsify Raymond's death certificate - but a newspaper reporter, suspicious of the circumstances, alerted police.
An autopsy confirmed Raymond had been beaten to death, leading to the arrests, trial and convictions of the clandestine Hollywood lovebirds caught in a real-life tragedy.
Kelly was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 21 months in prison. Mackaye was convicted of conspiring to withhold evidence and served 10 months.
After they were released from prison, Kelly and Mackaye married in 1931, four years after Raymond's death - a bizarre ending to a bizarre story.
